Routine Illness Surveillance

Keeping records of the number of children and staff that get sick will help identify an outbreak and to implement control measures early. A record of the history of illnesses amongst the children and staff allow comparisons to be made and establish baseline rates for infectious diseases. The baseline rates will allow the operator to promptly notice an increase or change in illness in the childcare centre.

It is important for childcare operators to observe the child for illness upon arrival, to note any symptoms of illness in the child’s records and to keep attendance records regarding arrival, departure and absences.

To help keep track of this information, an Illness Surveillance Form should be used.
